The soup I feed my children

Wow, the scanning process for this was really difficult. I’ve been working with a 0.03mm ink pen to achieve the ultra-fine face shading, however, as smooth as it looks, it’s pretty hard to reproduce now. I’m still planning to turn this into a limited print edition, so keep your fingers crossed for my test printing results next week. And thanks to all the lovely people who’ve helped me decide on which picture to print. If this doesn’t come out the way I imagine it, all your suggestions will of course be considered. :)

For the record

Just a short update on this sketch. It’s in fact the first kid I’ve ever drawn, which felt sort of weird considering the proportions are so different and the head really isn’t too big when you think it is. I’m just happy it came out so adorable that I’m a bit worried I can’t come up with another sweetheart for the right side of the picture (where there’s actually space for one more). I totally have no idea how to put ink on this either because the face details are really tiny in the original but oh well, I’ll manage. :)

The things I imagine

A new picture has been started… I have some grand ideas for this, it’s been on my mind for some time. Let’s see if it comes out the way I’m imagining it.

Interview dpi Magazine

I’d like to thank Taiwanese dpi Magazine for the absolutely beautiful interview they did with me for their latest issue, and especially the wonderful Miss Chiamin Liu who’s been my editor and is starting to become a good friend and teacher of the Chinese language and culture to me. ^_^

Here are a few images of my eight-page article, though I hope everyone’s gonna order their own copy of issue 133—it’s certainly worth it!

The flowers I gather

Oh, yesterday was a bank holiday and I haven’t got my own A3 scanner at home, so I had to wait for today to get a good scan. Now here it is, though!

I’ve been wanting to experiment with this picture after I read that gouache can be sealed with acrylic fixatives and then be painted on again to try techniques like glazing. However—and I have to say I am slightly infuriated by this—my acrylic fixative didn’t seal anything, not even after three good coats. Instead, all the gouache layers were coming off when I was trying to glaze, which made the hair pretty streaky. Better luck next time, I reckon.

PS. I did not tamper with the hue in Photoshop but the original’s really painted in those apocalyptic colours. ^_^
