Spring is in the air

So, the sun’s finally back up outside and I’m feeling way more motivated about work than I did during the past months of cold and utter darkness. It’s funny I just got me new work lamps and didn’t even need them yet because it’s so nice and bright in here all day.
Here’s what I’ve been up to this fine Thursday.

I’ve been so absorbed that I’ve not eaten, which seems pretty urgent now that I’ve stopped painting. Just a quick note, though, I’ve been informed my interview in dpi Magazine is coming out April 5th. You’d better start saving up.

On the ropes

While the oil paint is still drying before I can apply another layer, I’ve finished my latest ink drawing “On the ropes”. I’ve not done anything as vivid in a long time, but I guess it’s just very much how I’m feeling at the moment.

When the sun goes down

I’ve been painting a lot this weekend and I’m pretty happy with how the picture came out so far. I still, however, have absolutely no idea what colour to use for the hair, which, if you want it to match the eyebrows, could basically be anything.
I hope the photos can be seen properly on here, as I just noticed (again) the mysterious colour shift Photoshop applies to some pictures, how nice they look in Safari and how washed out they seem in Firefox. I’ll have to further investigate.

I also think I need one or two new lamps for my desk; it’s so sad I have to stop painting when the sun goes down because I can’t work with my small artificial light. I hope it’s spring soon!

Oh and I just checked again and think the colours are similarly washed out in Safari, sigh.

Updates

I’ve been ill for a few days, thus not been able to actually start painting on panel. That’ll happen sometime this week, though. In the meantime, I’ve managed to come up with a new sketch for an ink drawing, plus my website’s had a little makeover in both structure and colours. There’s a new navigation on portfolio and many more close-ups of pictures with lots of details. Moreover, Max has been so nice to help create a mobile version of my site, so you can even follow me on your iPhone. A few more days and we’ll be done.

Besides, I’m in the February issue of an online magazine called HEA7VEN. I guess it’s worth checking out their website and blog.

What’s new?

New year, new blog, I thought.
My last entry’s been ages ago. I’m just not much of a blogger type but I’ll try and update this more frequently now.

Most recent and flattering news is that I’ve been interviewed by Taiwanese dpi Magazine in December. I was first invited to join their European Special Issue but then actually made it into their monthly magazine, which means a total of I think eight or nine questions instead of three. The interview is scheduled to be published in March and I’m very excited for it! I’ll make sure to post a scan of my article as soon as I receive my copy and let you know how and where to order it.
I should also be in a couple of online magazines within the next weeks. I’ll post links to them here once they’re out.

I’m currently working on a batch of new paitings that have lake and forest spirits in them. Oil paint still seems so new to me compared to how easily I handle ink and watercolour, yet despite my impatience during the learning process and the common belief that acrylics are way easier to use, I came to find that oils are a most wonderful medium that I love to work with. My results certainly are light years away from where I want them to be but I can see the progress, and I am highly motivated to transfer my characters to another, more realistic dimension.

Here’s my latest sketch of a rather large piece. The size is intimidating to me after many years of small ink drawings but I’m sure I can manage it. The boy’s a bit more boyish this time, as I’m trying to fight the gender confusion of my other boys that apparently look like girls.
